The Advanced Rulebook |
|
Hey everyone,
I have a copy of the advanced rulebook and I am going to write a review about it, but it will not be until later today. I had hoped to do it sooner, but I have been a tad busy so it will have to wait until tonight.
Just thought I would give everyone the heads up!

Don't forget, it's only pieces of paper between two bits of stiff cardboard.

How did you manage that?

I've got a copy as well, so I guess I could pitch in.
Keep in mind that mine is "Damaged Stock," Which basically means that Mongoose didn't think it was good enough quality to sell. Basically I think a couple of pictures came out in the wrong order or something, but I'm having a hard time finding a major problem.
My thoughts:
Full color, very nice. Personally I really like the page design. Not a whole lot of artwork, several pictures of models that we've already seen. However, there are many pictures used to illustrate examples of actions, which is VERY nice. What illustrations do exist are okay, certainly not the quality you'd find in a GW Codex.
The Rules are presented in a better way than on the rules cards, and as mentioned above have pictures to illustrate what they are talking about. Some new rules are mixed in to the general rules as opposed to being put in the "Advanced Rules" section, which seems kind of odd. Basically, make sure you read the entire book once you get it.
For the most part the rules are well written. The Air Rules are fantastic. Structure rules are pretty neat *cough grenades cough*. Emplacement rules are included, but like in the Original SST seem rather lacking. Basically they are just fortified structures, and you use the structure rules for them. It really works out alright gamewise, but as presented forces you to look around the book a bit to get all the information. (The biggest problem with the SST rules, IMO.) Still, the Emplacement rules are the only place you really find that issue.
The Scenario section is nice. Lots of variety, and there are pictures of actual gaming tables to show an example battlefield as opposed to a simple diagrams.
The Campaign section isn't too bad. Like the rest of the game, it is designed for ease of play, so it doesn't have a lot of details that can bog the campaign down. There are neat little bits in there like force mulipliers and the like, although personally I find the "favored units" to be a bit silly for the most part. There are also blank campaign maps that you can use for your own campaigns, which is nice.
Other sections: The terrain section is a nice addition. The Battle report has lots of nice photographs, and will help pique interest in the game for somebody who finds it in a game store (Those who already know about the game might not find it particularly useful.) The Army sections are a bit fundamentalist in nature (ie they give you just enough background to make sure you know which side you're on--fluff has never been Mongoose's strong suit.) However there are a few hints of what units might show up in the future. Also, the army lists are great, and really help provide a unique flavor to any force you decide to put together. Oh, and they added the "Global Times" in the back. It's the same edition as previously released, so it's basically wasted space, IMO. There is an index in the back of the book, which is an excellent addition, and unlike some books I've seen in the past is quite useful.
Overall, I give the rulebook a B+/A-. Rules are great, presentation is nice, for the most part one of the most organized rulebooks I've seen.
Sorry if I stole your thunder Dyssnowman

Humm, since I have the SST book and you state there are many of the same problems, it sounds like the book should be rated more a C+/B-.

The preview on the MP site is the index, you should be able to answer those questions from looking at it.

When did your copy arrive STC? I put in for mine on the day Ian said they were available and he sent me an e-mail saying "done" but I have yet to receive mine.
Are you in Europe or USA?

LOL, nevermind. Britgirl just handed it to me and said look what came in the mail while you were at training dad! Now she knows all the secret tricks before I got to them.
As far as "Damaged Stock" mine was because the "Global Times" part in the back was mostly barcodes and mis-aligned graphics, but this is the exact part of the free download, so guess who's gonna be breaking out the elmer's glue in a few moments? The only other thing which looks damaged is the pages are not glued to the backing perfectly centered, the pages are closer to the top of the backing than the bottom by a millimeter or so. All in all, quite happy with mine.
Now, if my dang EFTF SAS and USMC Force Recon weren't 5 days behind schedule due to a bank SNAFU I'd be in hog-heaven about now...

Well at least they put in an index. I still dont understand why most game books dont have them, they are worth their weight in gold.
